Abstract:

The Summers County, West Virginia Music Project was a collection of recordings by Deborah Thompson and Randi Silnutzer in 1981. Twenty-three hours of music and interviews were recorded on twenty-five audiocassettes.

Biographical/Historical Note

Deborah Thompson and Randi Silnutzer were Appalachian Studies graduate students at Appalachian State University when they conducted interviews with musicians as part of their studies on Appalachian music. Summers County, West Virginia, where they interviewed musicians, is the location of the C and O Railroad which was immortalized by the John Henry legend. They studied primarily white musicians from varying styles, such as gospel, country, and bluegrass.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains transcriptions and sound recordings featuring interviews and performances by Summers County, West Virginia musicians. The collection is predominantly concerned with string band, ballads, and sacred music from Summers County. 6/11/2013: Added user and archival CD copies of all cassettes in Boxes 3 & 4.

Arrangement

The Summers County, West Virginia Music Project is arranged between two boxes by item type. Box 1 contains Index to Tapes and Transcriptions of Interviews and Box 2 contains the audiocassettes arranged alphabetically by person's last name with the addition of the Jumping Branch Benefit Concert at the end.

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room without restrictions. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections.

Provenance is unknown, likely donated by Deborah Thompson and Randi Silnutzer. This collection was opened to the public on 31 December 2003. Accessioned as MSC around 1994.
