Biographical/Historical Note

Born May 10, 1944 in Cohoes, New York, F. Whitney Jones attended Hamilton College, the University of Paris, and obtained his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1971. He has taught at UNC-Chapel Hill and St. Andrew's College where he was Chairman and Coordinator of the Black Mountain College Festival in Spring of 1974. To fund the Festival, he secured grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, The North Carolina Committee for Continuing Education in the Humanities, the North Carolina Arts Council, and gifts from numerous donors via an alumni network and direct-mail project. In 1977, Jones accepted the position of Development Director of Old Salem, Inc.

He also worked with the Jargon Society, a small-press publisher founded in 1951 by Jonathan Williams and David Ruff. This agency gave artists and poets a chance to see published books of their works. The website for Jargon Society describes itself as "a not for profit, public corporation devoted to charitable, educational and literary purposes".

Much of Jonathan Williams' correspondence with Jones about Jargon and its publications, business, and artists is also contained in this collection.
