Abstract:

This is a collection of color photographs and slides of Dr. William Gilbert Spencer, Stanley Hicks, Jean Ritchie, and Leonard Glenn, along with students in Dr. Spencer's Dulcimer Classes at Appalachian State University. Most were dated 1980's.

Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. William Gilbert Spencer (1921-2010) began his career with Appalachian State University in 1951 as band director and professor in woodwinds, instrument repair, and music education. He served as Chair of the Department of Music from 1958-1972. In 1978 he developed and directed the first Appalachian Dulcimer Workshop and Old Tyme Music Concert on campus. The workshop continues on an annual basis, attracting students nationwide. In honor of his dedication to the music program at Appalachian, dedication of the William G. Spencer Instrumental Rehearsal Hall was held in 1989. Dr. Spencer retired from Appalachian in 1986, but stayed in a part-time capacity as Broyhill Music Center building coordinator and audio-visual equipment manager until 1989.

Scope and Contents

Within this collection are photos of Stanley Hicks, renown instrument builder, woodworker, dancer, musician and storyteller; Ms. Jean Ritchie, American folk music singer, songwriter and Appalachian dulcimer player; and Leonard Glenn, a Beech Mountain resident who is one of the Appalachian region's most respected instrument makers. Dr. Spencer has also included group and individual pictures of students of the Appalachian Dulcimer Workshops from 1983-1988 and 1990.

Access Restrictions

This collection is open for use in the Dougherty Reading Room. An appointment for research is recommended. The Dougherty Reading Room is located on the 4th floor of Belk Library in Special Collections. Photographs in cold storage require at least 24 hours advanced notice prior to use.

Processing Information

Processed by Anita Elliott in March 2013. This collection was processed as part of a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. The grant funded extensive processing of the backlog within the W. L. Eury Appalachian Collection between 2012 and 2014.
