Abstract:

George J. Trinkaus (1878-1960) was an American composer and violinist. Trinkaus was born April 13, 1878 in Bridgeport, Connecticut and is a cousin of composer John Philip Sousa. In 1914 Trinkaus, along with his good friend Victor Herbert, helped found the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). He died May 19, 1960 in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The George J. Trinkaus Collection consists predominately of music scores written or arranged by Trinkaus. In addition to Trinkaus’ works, it also contains several scores written by other composers such as Victor Herbert and John Philip Sousa.

Biographical/Historical Note

George J. Trinkaus (1878-1960) was an American composer and violinist. Trinkaus was born April 13, 1878 in Bridgeport, Connecticut and is a cousin of composer John Philip Sousa who composed such works as “Stars and Stripes Forever” and “Semper Fidelis.” He graduated from the Yale School of Music. One of his best known compositions was “Mammy’s Kinky Headed Little Boy,” written in 1926. In addition to composing music, he was also a first violinist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra. In 1914 Trinkaus, along with his good friend Victor Herbert, helped found the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). Trinkaus was married twice. His first wife, Jane M. Trinkaus died in 1951. They had three children together. His second wife was Caroline Lentz Trinkaus. He died on May 19, 1960 in Ridgewood, New Jersey.

Scope and Contents

The George J. Trinkaus Collection consists predominately of music scores written or arranged by Trinkaus. In addition to Trinkaus’ works, it also contains several scores written by other composers such as Victor Herbert and John Philip Sousa. Other materials included in the collection include music programs, newspaper clippings, song lyrics, listings of his works, and correspondence.

Arrangement

This collection is divided into four series: Personal Papers, Compositions, Compilations and Arrangements, and Other Composers. Each series is arranged alphabetically.
