Abstract:

The Department of History was established in 1965 at Appalachian State Teacher's College and currently offers Bachelor and Masters degrees at Appalachian State University. The Department of History Records contain files created for academic and administrative purposes including budget information, correspondence, course schedule, curricula, faculty information, departmental self-studies and special programs, in addition to other materials.

Biographical/Historical Note

Though Appalachian State Teacher's College and predecessor institutions taught history, particularly focusing on preparing history teachers, the first major in history was approved in 1933 and the Department of History and Government was established in the following years. The Department of History, at Appalachian State University, was established and began offering Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in the 1965-1966 academic year. The department expanded and added a graduate course of study in 1967, and currently offers a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts in traditional history studies, as well as in Public History. The department also continues in its educational roots and offers a Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Arts degree in History, Secondary Education.

Scope and Contents

The Department of History Records contain files created for academic and administrative purposes including budget information, correspondence, course schedule, curricula, faculty information, departmental self-studies and special programs such as the Warren Wilson exchange program and the Dr. George Antone Collection concerning Black Studies. While most of the materials in this record group are files, correspondence reports, there are also 8 VHS tapes from the Carolina! Carolina! video series, which was produced by Appalachian State University's Department of History.
