Biographical/Historical Note

Appalachian State University (ASU) can trace its origins to 1899 when brothers B.B. and D. D. Dougherty founded Watauga Academy. Between 1929 and 1967, the institution operated as Appalachian State Teachers College before becoming Appalachian State University in 1967, joining the UNC system of schools in 1972.

As of 2012, ASU has seven main operating units, including Athletics, Business Affairs, General Counsel, Human Resources, Academic Affairs, Student Development, and University Advancement.

The Division of Student Development offers a variety of programs and activities to support learning, and provides needed services, support and recreational opportunities. This division includes the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, which coordinates University-Sponsored club activities, as well as Appalachian Popular Programming Society (A.P.P.S.) which functions as the entertainment programming organization for students. Other entertainment and programming opportunities are supported from a variety of departments and offices on campus, as reflected in the offerings in this collection.

Individuals, clubs, groups, and operating units have the opportunity to post information in several designated areas across ASU’s campus, and the majority of this collection is comprised of posters and flyers displayed across campus.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains ephemeral material produced by and/or related to Appalachian State University (ASU). The majority of the collection is comprised of posters and flyers, which were originally displayed in various designated locations across ASU’s campus. Many of the posters and flyers were produced to promote specific events or organizations, and were produced by various offices and groups that operate on campus, or in close connection with the ASU community.

Also included in this collection are programs produced for various events, including commencement ceremonies and chancellors' installations, among others. Finally, various other ephemeral materials, including a bumper sticker and circa 1950s postcards are included in the collection. Most of the materials date between 1990 and the present, though some items date as early as 1924.

Arrangement

This collection is divided into three series: Series I: Posters and Flyers, Series II: Event Programs, and Series III: Other Ephemera.

Series I is divided into four Subseries to house the posters and announcements by paper size. The same title may have been used over one or more subseries, as posters from the same unit were printed on various sized paper.

The files have been arranged alphabetically by operating unit or sponsor.

As posters are added to the files periodically, the posters within each folder are not arranged in any particular order.
