Biographical/Historical Note

Alpha Phi Omega is a co-educational, non-profit national service fraternity that upholds the foundational principles of leadership, friendship, and service. It was founded on the principles of the Scout Oath and Law and is dedicated to service both on campus, as well as to the local community and nation. The organization was founded by WWI veteran Frank Reed Horton in 1925 at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. It is currently headquartered in Independence, Missouri. Alpha Phi Omega has chapters in 366 colleges in the nation, with over 17,000 student members. Since its founding, the organization has had over 350,000 members.

The Tau Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega was founded at Appalachian State University in 1967, and it was the first fraternity established on campus. All members of Tau Beta must undergo a period of pledging in which they complete a certain amount of community service, learn the traditions of the organization, and pass certain tests and other requirements. Members have participated in various service projects throughout the years. Every year the chapter has gone to the Ginger Cascades camp to set up and take down tents and cut and stack firewood. Tau Beta members have also volunteered at places such as the Humane Society, Watauga Youth Network, Special Olympics, Mount Mission Farms, and the Watauga Hunger Coalition.
