Biographical/Historical Note

Gamma Beta Phi is an honor society and service organization that recognizes the scholastic achievements of college students. The organization promotes community service and fosters student leadership in all of its chapters. Gamma Beta Phi’s three main watchwords are scholarship, character, and service which represent the organization’s three major objectives. These objectives include promoting academic achievement, building character and leadership skills, and advancing education through various service projects that members participate in. The organization was founded on March 22, 1964 in Spartanburg, South Carolina by a group of college professors who developed the idea from a high school Beta Club. The central administrative office is now located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and there are chapters all across the nation. There are around 40,000 student members actively participating in Gamma Beta Phi, with membership numbers growing steadily.

Gamma Beta Phi thrives at Appalachian State University, with approximately 600 members in the local chapter. Members engage in meaningful service projects that aid educational programs in the mountain region. Members are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA, pay dues, and complete 15 points of service projects each semester. Some of the projects that the society has been involved with over the years include the Annual Blood Drive, Relay for Life, Adopt a Street trash pickup, Toys for Tots, Meals on Wheels, and tutoring students at Watauga High School.
