Abstract:

The largest college at Appalachian State University, the College of Arts and Sciences offers both undergraduate and graduate programs of study and currently houses 15 different academic departments. The College of Arts and Sciences Records contain meeting minutes, agendas, correspondence, reports and other administrative files, as well as VHS tapes and photos of commencement ceremonies.

Biographical/Historical Note

The College of Arts and Sciences was established in 1968, after Appalachian State Teachers College became Appalachian State University. This largest college at the university,offers both undergraduate and graduate programs of study and currently houses 15 different academic departments including: Anthropology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, Geography and Planning, Geology, Government and Justice Studies, History, Mathematical Sciences, Philosophy and Religion, Physics and Astronomy, Psychology, Sociology, and also offers interdisciplinary studies. The head of the college is the Dean of the College of Arts of Sciences, who reports to the provost.

Scope and Contents

The College of Arts and Sciences Records contain meeting minutes, agendas, correspondence, reports and other administrative files. In addition, there are two accessions that contain video and photos. The College of Arts and Sciences, Commencement Ceremony, 2000-2008 records contain complimentary CDs and photo albums from several commencement ceremonies, given by Chappell Graduation Images. The College of Arts and Sciences: Graduation Exercises Video File, 1992-1999 contains 8 VHS tapes which document commencement ceremonies as well. Much of the written material is from 1967-1993, though some exists after this date.
