Abstract:

The Department of Leadership and Educational Studies was created in 1995 in the Reich College of Education, essentially combining the departments of Leadership and Higher Education with Library Science and Education Foundations, and currently houses four programs – Instructional Technology, Higher Education, Library Science, and School Administration – and offers 12 different graduate degrees in various concentrations. These records contain mostly Library Science program records, but also contain one accession with information on the department as a whole.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Department of Leadership and Educational Studies is in the Reich College of Education and offers several programs of instruction leading to graduate degrees. In 1995, the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies was created, essentially combining the departments of Leadership and Higher Education with Library Science and Education Foundations. Currently, the department houses four programs – Instructional Technology, Higher Education, Library Science, and School Administration – and offers 12 different graduate degrees in various concentrations. ASU has had a long tradition in educational studies as well as in Library Science. As ASU essentially began as a teachers' training school, education courses have nearly always been offered, and in particular, Library Science courses have been offered since 1939.

Scope and Contents

The Department of Leadership and Educational Studies Records contain two main divisions – the records of the department, which consists of one accession (UA.2006.068) titled Leadership and Educational Studies Departmental Personal Committee Files, and Library Science Program records, comprised of three different accessions relating to the Library Science program over its long history. The first accession contains meeting minutes from 1974-1990. The records pertaining to the Library Science program include program histories, curricula, correspondence and ephemera, as well as a scrapbook from the Library Science Training Institute from 1968.
