Abstract:

The Department of Government and Justice Studies, formerly called the Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice, is a part of the College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University. This collection contains documents pertaining to the operations of the department, including correspondence, meeting minutes, and course change and curriculum change proposals.

Biographical/Historical Note

In 1965 Appalachian State University created the Political Science Department and offered its first undergraduate degree in Political Science. Prior to that all political science courses had been taught as electives in the Social Science Department.

In 1977 the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (BSCJ) program was created within the Political Science Department. Two years later tit was renamed the Department of Political Science and Ciminal Justice to reflect this change. In 2008 it became the Department of Government and Justice Studies.

At present the department is a part of the College of Arts and Sciences at Appalachian State University. It offers undergraduate degrees in Political Science (BS or BA) and Criminal Justice (BSCJ). Graduate offerings include Political Science (MA), Criminal Justice and Criminology (MSCJC), and Public Administration (MPA). The department also offers a Pre-Professional Legal Studies concentration to provide students with the opportunity to explore the legal profession in depth before applying to law school.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains information pertaining to the operations of the Department of Government and Justice Studies at Appalachian State University primarily during the 1980s and early 1990s.

The bulk of the files focus on activities within the department including annual reports, curriclum review and changes, the department's personnel committee, Faculty Research, the reaccrediation process and its graduate program. Records also exist from University-wide groups the department was a part of, mainly the Academic Policies and Procedures Committee and the Council of Arts and Sciences. Finally the collection contains information on the creation of the department's MPA program including planning, approval, and initial information records.

The files are arranged alphabetically by file name and then chronologically by beginning date.
