Biographical/Historical Note

The Office of International Education and Development (OEID), within Student Affairs, coordinates and executes the internationalization mission of Appalachian, which is to develop awareness, knowledge, appreciation, and respect of cultural differences in both domestic and international contexts in its students, faculty, staff and the surrounding communities. OIED is structurally organized into five programmatic departments: Appalachian Overseas Education Programs, International Outreach, International Research and Development, International Student Exchange & Study Abroad, and International Students & Scholar Services. In 2006, the Office of International Programs became the Office of International Education and Development, but international efforts have been formally carried out at ASU since at least 1972.

Scope and Contents

The Office of International Education and Development (OEID) Records contain administrative, planning and informational documents pertaining to international programs and endeavors carried out by the office. Due to the broad nature of the office's activities, files may pertain to study abroad programs, student or faculty international visits, foreign exchanges, visits from international students or university guests, campus programs, and international studies courses. Many of the files are administrative in nature or correspondence, particularly regarding the coordination of programs. Some of the files relate directly to Dr. T. Marv Williamsen, former Director of International Programs. Though the files range from 1973-2003, many come from the earlier years of International Programs.
