Biographical/Historical Note

The Center for Appalachian Studies, an interdisciplinary program of University College at Appalachian State University, was established in 1978 to coordinate and promote curriculum offerings, public programs, and research activities on the Appalachian region. Built on the good work of generations of Appalachian scholars, including folklorist Amos Abrams and Cratis Williams, considered the father of Appalachian Studies, the Center works to illuminate and sustain the region's rich history, cultures, communities, and ecology. The Center coordinates coursework leading to the only Master of Arts degree offered anywhere in Appalachian Studies, with three concentrations: Culture, Appalachian Music, and Sustainable Development, as well as two Graduate Certificates in Appalachian Studies, one offered on campus and one offered online. The Center also coordinates coursework leading to the only Bachelor of Arts degree in Appalachian Studies in the nation and undergraduate minors in Appalachian Studies and Appalachian Music.

Scope and Contents

The Appalachian Studies Program Records contain committee and departmental files dating 1977-1992, including student application information, correspodence, guest speaker files, graduate student files, program committees, personnel files, the Appalachian Cultural Center's constitution, grant proposals, fellowship information and the formation of the Masters program.
