Abstract:

Upward Bound provides academic support to high school students so they may complete high school, enroll in college, and successfully obtain a college degree. The Learning Assistance Program (LAP) provides integrated services fostering the personal development and academic growth of general and specific student populations at Appalachian. The Records of the Learning Assistance Program/Upward Bound contain some grant files, and mostly administrative and program files, dating 1972-2003.

Biographical/Historical Note

Upward Bound provides academic support to high school students so they may complete high school, enroll in college, and successfully obtain a college degree. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education's TRIO Programs division, qualifying participants come from families who meet federal income guidelines, or will be first-generation college students.

The Learning Assistance Program (LAP) provides integrated services fostering the personal development and academic growth of general and specific student populations at Appalachian. LAP offers various programs which provide services to students which include tutoring in introductory level courses, Supplemental Instruction and learning skills courses and consultations. Specific populations of students are provided a comprehensive system of support which may include academic advising, counseling, tutoring, mentoring, orientation, instruction, study skills and academic study halls to enable them to be successful in their academic work.

Scope and Contents

The Records of the Learning Assistance Program/Upward Bound contain some grant files, and mostly administrative and program files, dating 1972-2003. Additionally, this record group contains budget information and an accession with a book titled "Handbook for Adult Students." The grant files contain proposals, applications and correspondence regarding grants administered by LAP, Upward Bound and Special Services for Disadvantaged Students.
