The Office of General Studies operated within Academic Affairs, and coordinated efforts of ASU for orientation and advising of new students as well as general curriculum for all students. The Office of General Studies Records contain files mostly pertaining to Orientation and advising, and date 1974-2001.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Office of General Studies operated within Academic Affairs, and coordinated efforts of ASU for orientation and advising of new students as well as general curriculum for all students. These and the other functions of the office were largely absorbed into University College in 2010, which now operates a General Education Program, First Year Seminar and Student and Faculty Support (which includes Advising and Orientation). The functions of the Office of General Studies have been carried out by various offices and departments over Appalachian's history, but the Office of General Studies as such, was in operation from approximately 1973-2010.

Scope and Contents

The Office of General Studies Records contain files mostly pertaining to Orientation and advising, and date 1974-2001. These particular files include brochures, schedules, correspondence, planning procedures, reports, memos, handbooks, and memos. Additionally this record group includes correspondence concerning advising, information on the General Education program, a history file on Freshman Learning Communities and reports and correspondence from the Dean's Office.
