Abstract:

Dr. Margaret McFadden was professor of Women's Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies at Appalachian State University, 1975-2009, and for a time, was chair of the Department of Women's Studies. These records contain McFadden's papers relating to her career as professor and chairperson, and date 1910-2009.

Biographical/Historical Note

Margaret (Maggie) McFadden came to Appalachian State University in 1975 as an assistant professor in Interdisciplinary Studies. McFadden earned a B.A. in Humanities/English from the University of Denver in 1963, an A.M. in English Language & Literature from Boston University in 1964, and a Ph.D. in Humanities from Emory University in 1973. She was the Founding Director of the Women’s Studies program and served as director for more than 12 years, at different times during her tenure at Appalachian. McFadden also served as editor of the National Women’s Studies Association Journal for six years, from 1997-2003.

McFadden received a Fulbright Scholarship in 1991-92 at the Institute of Women's Studies, Åbo Akademi University, Turku, Finland, where she taught and researched in Women's Studies and in the Department of History. She was made a Docent (Guest Professor) at Åbo Akademi University in 2001 and continued to teach occasional courses there. In 2004 she received a Fulbright Grant to serve as distinguished chair of gender studies at the Institute of Gender Studies at the University of Klagenfurt in Austria, where she taught women’s history and feminist theory courses and conducted research on international women activists between 1918-40. McFadden retired from teaching at Appalachian in June 2009.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains various documents and materials related to Dr. Margaret McFadden's career as a teacher, chairperson, and as a member of various committees, councils, and boards that were most closely associated with the Women's Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies Program. These included the University College Council, Major Governance Committee, and the Watauga College.

Arrangement

The papers are arranged into 12 series:  Series I: Annual Reports/Year-End Reports contains annual faculty assessments and year-end reports that describe McFadden's scholarly activities every year. Series II: Articles contains copies of newspaper clippings, scholarly essays, magazine articles, and other materials related to feminist theory and women's studies. Series III: Committees/Councils/Memberships contains documents related to McFadden's participation in academic clubs and professional committees. Series IV: Courses and Related Research contains lecture notes and research materials that McFadden used while teaching at ASU. Series V: Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS) contains correspondence, meeting minutes, and other documents related to the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. Series VI: Lectures/Presentations/Talks/Conferences contains handwritten and typed copies of McFadden's notes for class lectures, conference presentations, and research seminars. Series VII: Mixed Media contains CDs, cassettes, postcards, and microfilm related to women's studies. Series VIII: Personal Papers/Publications contains scholarly essays and book reviews that were written by McFadden and published during her career. Series IX: Publications contains booklets, brochures, newsletters, and announcements related to local, national, and international women's studies organizations. Series X: Research contains bibliographies and copies of scholarly articles that McFadden used to plan the courses she taught at ASU. Series XI: Women's Studies, General contains documents generated by the Women's Studies department during McFadden's tenure at ASU. Series XII: Oversize Materials contains oversize newspapers, posters, and brochures related to women's studies and LGBT organizations.

Series I is arranged chronologically. Series II, III, V, VIII, X, and IX are arranged alphabetically by subject. Series IV is arranged alphabetically by course title and then chronologically by course date. Series VI, VII, IX, and XII are first divided into presentation or media type and then arranged alphabetically by subject.

This series contains McFadden's annual faculty assessments and year-end reports. In these documents, McFadden describes her courses, research, publications, conferences, and other scholarly activities of the past year, as well as her involvement with faculty committees and student advising. The series also contains correspondence between McFadden and the head of the Interdisciplinary Studies department, charts and graphs of faculty salary information, and copies of McFadden's scholarly articles included in the annual reports.

Series X: Research

Series Description:

This series primarily contains copies of newspaper articles and academic essays that McFadden used to plan the courses she taught at ASU. Most articles were written by prominent civil rights and women's studies scholars, such as Cynthia Griggs Fleming, or by historical figures who influenced the modern women's rights movement, such as Flora Tristan. Other materials include bibliographies of important scholarly works and world maps. The series is arranged alphabetically by subject.
