Biographical/Historical Note

Human Resource Services (HRS) at Appalachian State University is dedicated to proactively identifying and responding to the campus community's ever-changing needs. Human resources play a key role in developing a company or organization in order to build a better understanding on how to have a better employment relations or relationships in the workforce. HR work on bringing out the best work ethic of the employees. Human Resources are responsible for the administration of HR policies and procedures, employment services, classification and compensation, benefit administration, and the organizational development and workforce planning. From the facilitation of greater effectiveness through the merit-based recruitment and selection of top employees, to the administration of policies and procedures that support our faculty and staff, HRS is committed to the goals and objectives of Appalachian State University. They strive to create a workplace environment that values integrity, diversity and development, responds to and balances the needs of our employees with the needs of the campus community, by upholding all state and federal laws.

Human Resources strive to improve the lives of the people they serve by facilitating innovative development initiatives; providing factually accurate and timely information; and holding ourselves to the highest standard in policy and practice. Human Resources will carry on with their commitment to continuous improvement and customer service, continuing in the Appalachian tradition of attracting, developing, and retaining a dedicated, active, and innovative faculty and staff. Human Resources will be the model strategic business partner for all areas of campus and aligning peoples strategies with the business goals. HR work to create a better work environment for all employees.

Scope and Contents

The Human Resource Services records consists of memos, reports, handbooks and minutes, dating from 1973 to 2001. Reports include self-study reports regarding the National Collegiate Athletic Association, as well as salary reports for Appalachian State University employees. Staff handbooks come from various departments and years. Memos are produced by HRS for all campus departments. This collections contains athletics certification files and equity manuals according to NCAA principles. Included in this collections are also compliance programs files and information regarding Americans with disabilities for the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In this collection are also restricted items: salary statements, legislative increases and salary increases, including BD-119. Other restricted items include personnel memos to various departments, year-end reports, and compliance reports.

Arrangement

The Human Resource Services collection was arranged by series, then in alphabetical order then by chronological order. Series are determined by five different actions with HRS: salary information, compliance and year-end reports, personnel records with EEOC information, athletic certification, and manuals. The first and second series are restricted due to personal information. The first series contains BD-119s, legislative increases, salary budget reports, and salary increases for university employees. The second series contains compliance reports and year-end reports. The third and fourth series are unrestricted. The third series consists of personnel memos and EEOC files in regards to compliance programs and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The fourth series contains all athletics certification information in regards to NCCA certification and athletics certification for division holdings. The fifth series contains Human Resource Services manuals.

Access Restrictions

Series III, Series IV, and Series V are open for public use and research in the Dougherty Reading Room, Special Collections, Belk Library and Information Commons. Series I and Series II are restricted from the public access and use.

Acquisitions Information

Human Resource Services materials were transferred and received from the University Record Center. Records were accessioned as they were received before processing collection.
