Abstract:

James Gordon Lindsay, Jr. began his career at Appalachian State University in 1969 as an Assistant Professor of Physics. His papers contain materials relating to Dr. Lindsay's role as a professor of physics at Appalachian from 1969 to 1992.

Biographical/Historical Note

James Gordon Lindsay, Jr. (1941-1992) was born in Norfolk, Virginia on January 23, 1941. In 1962 he married Carrie Ellen Turner and together they had two children.

He attended Virginia Tech where he received degrees in Mechanical Engineering, B. S. 1964; Nuclear Science and Engineering M. S. 1966; and Nuclear Physics, Ph. D. 1971.

Lindsay attended Appalachian State University in 1969 as an Assistant Professor of Physics. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1974. Lindsay served as an advisor to all freshman Physics majors, pre-Engineering students, and pre-Medical students. In addition he taught Freshman Seminar and Summer Ventures Programs. Lindsay was active on several University committees and was a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers, American Physics Society, Physics and Astronomy Orientation, and the Society for Physics Students.

Lindsay died on September 7, 1992 of cardiovascular problems.

Scope and Contents

The James Gordon Lindsay Jr. Papers contain materials relating to Dr. Lindsay's role as a professor of physics at Appalachian from 1969 to 1992. The Lindsay Papers contain mostly printed material including: instructional materials, such as syllabi, handouts, and transparencies; correspondence; reprinted articles; department and committee reports, and other papers.
