Abstract:

The Appalachian State University Internship Office of Appalachian State University endeavors to help students search, apply for, secure an internship, while interacting with the Internship Program. This collection contains internship program materials, chancellor correspondence, administrative files, workshop information, academic endeavors in field experience education, and general office papers regarding student internships, with materials dating from 1965-1988.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Internship Office at Appalachian State University work to help students search, apply for, and secure internships.  Though the origins of the Internship Office are loosely unknown, the office worked with other departments across campus to coordinate and aid student development.  Working with graduate programs and academic departments, these other university offices include the Peer Career Center, the Career Development Center, the Internship Fair and the Internship Resource Counselor.  The Internship Office worked to create and collaborate to produce internship programs on behalf of Appalachian State University.  The department assisted in corresponding with the placement hosts of internees.  The graduate school departments work on behalf of this process to achieve success for the internship experiences.  Many of the endeavors of the internship office consisted of university development and state-wide progress for field experience education.  

Scope and Contents

The Internship Office Collections contains correspondence, seminar notes, workshop information, and general office papers regarding student internships through Appalachian State University dating primarily from 1970-1989.  The first series consists of chancellor correspondence, general offices files reflecting administrative and financial operations.  The second series, Field Experience Education, contains seminars in the field, academic theories, and the Society of Field Experience Education.  Series III, Graduate School Materials and Interactions, contains department interactions, master's program materials, exams, and other related materials corresponding to the Internship Office.  Series IV, Internship Hosts and Outreach, includes information about internship placements, prospective jobs, internship conventions, job fairs, and notable internship hosts like TACCM.  Series V, Internship Programs, contains documents highlighting explicitely the internship program with correspondences of Director M. W. Williamson, internee profiles and information, internship papers and exams, and remaining files reflecting the academic program for internships.  

Arrangement

This collection was arranged into five different series reflecting five central components of the internship office activities, program materials, and education initiatives.  Each series is organized in alphabetical order.  The first series is arranged with internship offices files consisting of administrative operations and chancellery corresondence.  The second series is a collective series consisting of academic and scholarly pursuits in the field experience education initiatives.  After Field Exerience Education is Series III, which includes all graduate school materials and interactions relating to the field.  The fourth series contains correspondences and materials from prospective internship placement hosts and other outreaching initiatives such as job fairs.  The fifth series contains all the important information related to the Internship Program and class materials.

Scope and Contents

The second series consists of scholarly and academic efforts in Field Experience Education for the sustainability and evidential support of the Internship Office. This series contains documents, notes, pamphlets, and correspondence in relation to collaborative efforts on behalf of other universities, environmental education seminars, the Society of Field Experience Education, and other career education initiatives.
