Abstract:

This collection contains oral history interviews conducted between 1956 and 2000. This oral history collections includes primarily former administrators, faculty, staff, retirees and students of Appalachian State University. Found in this collection are interviews of significant people like B.B. Dougherty, Satie Broyhill, Cratis Williams, Herbert Wey, Francis Borkowski, W.H. Plemmons, and Dr. Richard Howe. Many interviews conducted by the University Archivist, Ruth Currie. Included in this collections is an an oral history project representative of the Appalachian State University Graduate School. The bulk of the interviews in this entire collection were taken between 1993 and 1998.

Biographical/Historical Note

The University Oral History Collection reflects the significant origins and timeline events of Appalachian State University, which started around 1899 when brothers B.B. and D. D. Dougherty founded Watauga Academy. Between 1929 and 1967, the institution operated as Appalachian State Teachers College before becoming Appalachian State University in 1967. Appalachian State University joined the University of North Carolina system of schools in 1972. B.B Dougherty served as president from 1899 to 1955. Continuing in this tradition, many administrators and leaders of the university served long tenureship on campus. Most of Appalachian State University’s former presidents and chancellors are represented in the beginning of this collection.

Many interviews in this collection were conducted by Dr. Ruth Currie. Currie earned a Ph.D. in American History from Duke University. Currie served as University Archivist of Appalachian State University. She was also a history professor at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. Currie is the author of several books, including "Appalachian State University: The First Hundred Years," which describes the history of Appalachian State University. Included in her interviews are important figures such as long-standing administrators, board members, faculty, staff and campus supporters. Interviewees in this collection consist of people like Robert Snead, Satie Broyhill and Clinton Parker.

The oral history materials of the Appalachian State University Graduate School contains an assortment of interviews from faculty and emeriti. Interviews consist of people like Dr. Richard Howe, Dr. Joyce Lawrence, and Dr. Thomas Keefe.

The remaining interviews following the Graduate School recordings are from people like Gloria Steinem and Melissa Barth. A Report to Region interviews capture local campus and university history from speakers like Rogers Whitener, John Welborn, and Ned Trivette.

Scope and Contents

Conducted between 1956 and 2000, this collection consists of interviews with former administrators, emeriti, faculty, staff and students reflecting the collective oral history of Appalachian State University. Most of the interviews cover university history, campus experiences and reminiscences concerning time spent as a student, employee, or participant of Appalachian State University. Many transcripts are available for some interviews and are found in Series I, Series II, and Series III. Many transcripts have restrictions that apply to each series within a subseries level. Audiovisual materials for the interviews are presented in audiocassette tapes, Betacam tapes, VHS tapes and a HI 8 tape. Some of these materials contain interviews of B.B. Doughterty, Annie Dougherty Rufty, Elizabeth Brown Scoggins, Virginia Brown, Cratis Williams and other significant people. Most of the VHS tapes include audiovisual interviews with Satie Broyhill.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged into four series, with Series I consisting of interviews with presidents and chancellors, dating from 1956 to 2000. Series I is split into Subseries A, containing transcripts of unrestricted interviews and into Subseries B, containing transcripts of restricted interviews. Each subseries is arranged alphabetically by last name. Series II consists of interviews conducted between 1992 and 2000 by the University Archivist, Ruth Currie. Series II is split into Subseries A, containing transcripts of unrestricted interviews and into Subseries B, containing transcripts of restricted interviews. Each subseries is arranged alphabetically by last name. Series III was conducted in 1995 for the oral history collection related to the graduate school. Series III is split into Subseries A, containing transcripts of unrestricted interviews and into Subseries B, containing transcripts of restricted interviews. Each subseries is arranged alphabetically by last name. Series IV contains all audiovisual materials representative of Series I, Series II, and Series III. Each tape is arranged alphabetically by last name. Subseries A contains all unrestricted audiovisual materials. Subseries B contains restricted audio recordings in the format of audiocassettes. Subseries C contains restricted video recordings in format of VHS and Betacam.

Access Restrictions

Few of these materials are open for public use and research in the Dougherty Reading Room, Special Collections, Belk Library and Information Commons. Many interviews do not have release forms and are therefore restricted from the public for use, access, or duplication. Therefore, the following are open to the Dougherty Reading Room: Subseries A of Series I, Subseries A of Series II, Subseries A of Series III, and Subseries A of Series IV. The following boxes are restricted in the series: Subseries B of Series I, Subseries B of Series II, Subseries B of Series III, and Subseries B and Subseries C of Series IV. Acquisitions Information

Materials were either recorded by archivists, such as Ruth Currie, and unknown interviewers. Records and materials were accessioned within Special Collections, Belk Library and Information Commons, and added into this collection.

Processing Information

This collection was originally processed by Grant Maher in 2012 and reprocessed by an archivist in 2014. This collection has been reprocessed by Dan Devine in September 2015.

Series Description

This series contains interviews with former presidents and chancellors of Appalachian State University. Though the interviewees were conducted at different times, all former leaders of Appalachian State University were represented in this collection, with the exception of Chancellor Kenneth Peacock and Interim President J.D. Rankin. The following individuals have interviews in this collection (with their title and dates of service in parentheses): Dr. B.B. Dougherty (Founder, President, 1899-1955), Dr. W.H. Series II: Transcripts of Ruth Currie Interviews, 1992-2000

Series Description

This series includes interviews conducted by former University Archivist Ruth Currie. Most of the interviews were done with former faculty, staff, community members, and alumni of Appalachian State. Interviews were conducted between 1992 and 2000, in pursuit of developing a oral collection to capture Appalachian State's university history. The unrestricted interviews are in Subseries A and the restricted interviews are in Subseries B. Restricted interviews without transcripts were not included in this series. Within each subseries, every file is organized by last name in alphabetical order.

Series Description

This series is a collection of interviews recorded in 1995 concerning the history of Appalachian State University's Graduate School. Jessica Kelly and Dorothy Tate created the collection and conducted the interviews in 1995. This collection includes transcripts for all interviewees. The unrestricted interviews are in Subseries A and the restricted interviews are in Subseries B. Within each subseries, every file is organized by alphabetical order.
